Lock it away from children and pets
This matters more than anything else on this page. Colorful art and fruity names can catch a child’s eye, which is why every chrome carts disposable belongs out of reach, ideally in a locked box. If a child or pet may have swallowed or chewed one, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) or your vet at once. In an emergency call 911.
Keep it cool and out of the sun
Heat thins the oil, which raises the odds of leaks, and it is bad for lithium batteries too. A closed car in summer can get dangerously hot, so do not leave a pen in a glove box. A drawer at room temperature is ideal.
Store it upright
Standing the pen with the mouthpiece up helps keep oil away from the airway. If it spends most of its time in a bag, a small hard case can stop it from being crushed.
Charge with care
Use a low-power charger, stay nearby and unplug it once it is done. Do not charge on a bed or sofa, and do not use a pen that looks swollen.
Recycle it properly
An empty pen is still a battery. Household trash and curbside recycling are not safe routes, because lithium cells can start fires in waste trucks and sorting plants. Search for a local household hazardous waste or battery drop-off site.
Traveling
Cannabis laws change at state and national borders, and carrying a vape on a plane can be illegal even between places where it is legal. Check the rules for your specific route before you go, and if you are in doubt, leave it at home.
If a pen starts to leak
Stop carrying it in a pocket, wipe it with a dry paper towel and keep it upright for a while. Check the base and the USB-C port. Oil near the charging port is a reason to stop charging, and a pen that continues to leak should be retired. Wash your hands afterward and clean any residue off surfaces children or pets can reach.
Signs it is time to retire a pen
Replace a pen that has a bulging body, gets hot without being used, smells chemical, or tastes burnt with oil still showing. Also be cautious with one that has been dropped hard or left in serious heat, as the battery may have been damaged even if nothing is visible on the outside.
